What Does the Bible Say About Animals?

The Bible teaches that animals are living creatures created by God as part of His creation. God gave them life and included them in the world He made both for humanity and for them. While animals were not created in the image of God as human beings were, and they do not have an eternal soul, they are still important to God and are part of His care.

In Genesis 1:28, God gives mankind authority over the animals. This authority is not a license for abuse or cruelty, but rather a responsibility to govern them wisely—protecting, feeding, and treating them with respect.

The Bible also shows that God cares about the well-being of animals. For example, Psalm 36:6 says that God “preserves both people and animals.” The laws given to Israel even included commands to treat animals well, such as allowing them to rest and prohibiting mistreatment (Exodus 23:4-5).

When it comes to killing animals, the Bible permits it for food, clothing, or protection, but it condemns violence without cause (Genesis 9:3; Mark 1:6; Psalm 11:5).

In summary

Animals are a valuable part of God’s creation. While they are not equal to human beings, they deserve respect and care. God expects us to treat them with love and responsibility.
